Follies Revival Extends On Broadway

Opening night was barely two weeks ago. But the limited-run revival of James Goldman and Stephen Sondheim’s Follies has extended it’s schedule already. Originally set to close on the first of the year, the show will now run through January 22, 2012. This comes as the production leaped into the top five box office grosses last week, doing over a million dollars in ticket sales to enthusiastic audiences.

The winner of seven Tony Awards®, Follies is a bittersweet look at the follies of youth seen through the eyes of age and experience. When former members of the “Weismann’s Follies” reunite on the eve of their theater’s demolition, two couples remember their glorious past and face the harsher realities of the present. In the crumbling glamour of the theater, the shadows of their younger selves remind them of the complicated steps they’ve danced – both on the stage and throughout their lives.

This revival comes to Broadway complete with a 28-piece orchestra and a cast of 41 – led by Broadway veterans Bernadette Peters, Jan Maxwell, Danny Burstein, Ron Raines and Elaine Paige.

Follies Revival Opens On Broadway

It’s the groundbreaking show that defined musical theatre for a generation. And now the revival of James Goldman and Stephen Sondheim’s Follies has opened on Broadway. While previews of the show began in early August, last night marked the official opening at New York’s Marquis Theatre.

The winner of seven Tony Awards®, Follies is one of James Goldman and Stephen Sondheim’s greatest works. It is a bittersweet look at the follies of youth seen through the eyes of age and experience. When former members of the “Weismann’s Follies” reunite on the eve of their theater’s demolition, two couples remember their glorious past and face the harsher realities of the present. This revival comes to Broadway for a historic limited engagement, complete with a 28-piece orchestra and a cast of 41 – led by such Broadway babies as two-time Tony® winner Bernadette Peters, four-time Tony® nominee Jan Maxwell, two-time Tony® nominee Danny Burstein and three-time Emmy nominee Ron Raines and Olivier Award winner Elaine Paige.

A Little Night Music

Good news! As of this morning we’ve just added tickets to ShowBus Tours to see Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury in Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, which begins previews tonight at Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre.

Based on Ingmar Bergman’s film, Smiles of a Summer Night, A Little Night Music is a witty and urbane musical set in waltz time. The action takes place in a weekend country house in turn-of-the-century Sweden, where surprising liaisons, long-simmering passions and a taste of love’s endless possibilities are all brought to light.

On The Broadway Horizon

Here’s a look at a couple of shows that are destined for Broadway later this year.

Wishful Drinking
Carrie Fisher, well known for her role as Princess Leia in the first Star Wars trilogy, is set to bring her one-woman show, Wishful Drinking, to Broadway’s Studio 54 this Fall. Fisher, the daughter of showbiz legends Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, tells the not-so-idyllic tale of growing up in Hollywood. Watch for previews to begin on September 22nd, with opening night set for October 4th.

A Little Night Music
Variety magazine reports that Trevor Nunn’s production of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s A Little Night Music is headed for Broadway late this year. The show, which follows three lovestruck couples as they lose, and find, each other during a long midsummer night on a country estate, originally hit Broadway in 1973. No casting has been announced for this revival, which is eying a December opening.

Going, Going…
Despite its star-studded cast of Jeremy Irons, Joan Allen and Marsha Mason, Broadway’s Impressionism is set to play it’s final performance at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on Sunday, May 10th. The limited run production, which opened on March 24th, was originally scheduled to end on July 5th. But after 23 previews and 56 regular performances, the show will now go dark one week from this Sunday.
