Follies Revival Opens On Broadway

It’s the groundbreaking show that defined musical theatre for a generation. And now the revival of James Goldman and Stephen Sondheim’s Follies has opened on Broadway. While previews of the show began in early August, last night marked the official opening at New York’s Marquis Theatre.

The winner of seven Tony Awards®, Follies is one of James Goldman and Stephen Sondheim’s greatest works. It is a bittersweet look at the follies of youth seen through the eyes of age and experience. When former members of the “Weismann’s Follies” reunite on the eve of their theater’s demolition, two couples remember their glorious past and face the harsher realities of the present. In the crumbling glamour of the theater, the shadows of their younger selves remind them of the complicated steps they’ve danced – both on the stage and throughout their lives.

This revival comes to Broadway for a historic limited engagement, complete with a 28-piece orchestra and a cast of 41 – led by such Broadway babies as two-time Tony® winner Bernadette Peters, four-time Tony® nominee Jan Maxwell, two-time Tony® nominee Danny Burstein and three-time Emmy nominee Ron Raines and Olivier Award winner Elaine Paige.

Follies Is Coming To Broadway

Elaine Paige is the latest addition to the cast of Follies

The revival of Stephen Sondheim’s legendary musical Follies is coming to the Marquis Theater for a limited run this summer, after a successful engagement at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Previews are set to begin on August 7th with opening night planned for September 12th.

Coming with the show to Broadway will be returning stars Bernadette Peters, Jan Maxwell, Danny Burstein and Ron Raines. And recently it was announced that Elaine Paige will also join the Broadway cast in the Carlotta Campion role that she played earlier this year at the Kennedy Center.

Follies tells the story of a reunion in a crumbling Broadway theatre, scheduled for demolition, of the past performers of the “Weismann’s Follies,” a musical revue that played in that theatre between the World Wars. It focuses on two couples, Buddy and Sally Durant Plummer and Benjamin and Phyllis Rogers Stone, who are attending the reunion. The wives were showgirls in the Follies. Both couples are deeply unhappy with their marriages. Buddy, a traveling salesman, is having an affair with a girl on the road. Sally is still as much in love with him as she was years ago. And Ben is so self-absorbed that Phyllis feels emotionally abandoned. Several of the former showgirls perform their old numbers, sometimes accompanied by the ghosts of their former selves.

Wonderland: A New Alice, A New Musical

It’s a new Alice and an all-new musical as Wonderland heads for The Great White Way in the Spring of next year. That’s the word from Broadway’s Marquis Theatre where this innovative new production will begin previews on March 21, 2011.

An exciting new spin on the classic story of Alice and her Looking-Glass world, Wonderland is about a modern-day woman who has lost her joy in life. Estranged from her husband, alienated from her daughter and in danger of losing her career, she goes on a life-changing adventure far below the streets of New York City. There a marvelous cast of familiar characters helps her rediscover what’s really important.

Featuring a fresh, contemporary pop score from the creator of Jekyll and Hyde, Wonderland will arrive on Broadway after sold out performances at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa, Florida, and at the Alley Theatre in Houston. Opening night is set for April 17th at the Marquis. Come Fly Away Sets Closing Date

Despite many outstanding reviews, Come Fly Away, the Broadway musical set to the music of Frank Sinatra, is set to close at the Marquis Theatre on Sunday, September 5th.

In addition to the music of Ol’ Blue Eyes, the show features choreography by Twyla Tharp. Her work earned her a Tony Award nomination, though the award ultimately went to Bill T. Jones for Fela!

While the show opened strong, the box office has been falling for several months, presumably resulting in the decision to close. As of September 5th, the production will have played 26 previews and 187 regular performances.

Celebs Flock To Come Fly Away

March 25th marked opening night at the Marquis Theatre for Come Fly Away, the new Broadway musical created, choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp, and featuring the songs of Frank Sinatra. And this opening had some very big names in the audience, including Sinatra’s two daughters, Nancy and Tina, Donald Trump, Tommy Tune, and Frank and Kathie Lee Gifford, to name just a few.

Come Fly Away tells the story of four couples falling in and out of love at a swinging nightclub on a star-lit evening. The show features a score of beloved Sinatra classics including “Summer Wind,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “My Way,” “Theme from New York, New York” and “I’ve Got the World on a String.”

Finian’s Rainbow
The St. James Theatre will be home to this Fall’s Broadway revival of Finian’s Rainbow. Set in the mythical southern state of Missitucky, Finian’s Rainbow pits a charming Irish dreamer and his headstrong daughter against the host of complications that await them in their newly adopted land: a bigoted southern Senator, a credit crisis, a pesky leprechaun and, of course, a complicated love affair that gives birth to some of the most witty, charming and heartfelt songs ever written for the stage.

Watch for previews of Finian’s Rainbow to begin on October 8th with opening night at the St. James Theatre on October 29th.

The Addams Family
Last May we told you about the upcoming Broadway production of The Addams Family starring Broadway veterans Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth. At that time, we couldn’t tell you exactly when the show would open, or where it would open. Today we’re happy to say that those details have now been firmed up.

Watch for The Addams Family to begin previews at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on March 4th with an April 8th opening to follow.

The Addams Family features a book by the Jersey Boys team of Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice and music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. Choreography is by Sergio Trujillo, known for his work in Next to Normal and Jersey Boys.

9 To 5 Closing
It’s a premature Broadway curtain call for 9 To 5: The Musical as the show prepares to go dark after its final performance at the Marquis Theatre on September 6th. Inspired by the 1980s film of the same name, 9 To 5 will have lasted only 24 previews and 148 performances when it closes its doors Labor Day weekend.
