Million Dollar Quartet Announces Opening Dates
We’ve told you previously here about the upcoming Broadway show, Million Dollar Quartet. The fifties musical is based on the famous 1956 recording session that brought together four of rock ‘n’ roll’s all time greatest artists, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. The show recreates that legendary session, bringing to the Broadway stage such early rock mega-hits as Blue Suede Shoes, Great Balls of Fire, I Walk The Line, Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On, Folsom Prison Blues and many more.

Now producers have firmed up dates for the show, announcing that previews will begin on March 13th, with opening night set for April 11th at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre. You can be sure that ShowBus will have tickets as soon as they are available.

Valerie Harper Coming to Broadway
Television’s Emmy award winning Rhoda is headed to the stage in 2010. Valerie Harper will star as force-of-nature celebrity Tallulah Bankhead in the new comedy Looped. Harper will play Bankhead near the end of her career when she is called in to loop a line of dialogue for what would ultimately be her last movie.

Previews for Looped will begin on February 19th with opening night scheduled for March 14th at the Lyceum Theatre.

Godspell Broadway Bound – Again
The plan was for the revival of Godspell to make its way to Broadway in September of 2008. That plan fell through, but producer Ken Davenport now says that the musical is back on track for a return to The Great White Way during the 2010-2011 season. This will be the first Godspell revival since its original Broadway debut more than 30 years ago. That production played more than 500 performances and won critical acclaim. We’ll keep you posted as firmer dates become available for Godspell.

Show Closings
Despite record holiday season box office numbers for Broadway in general, a number of shows have recently closed or are set to close as the new year begins. Already dark are A Steady Rain, Hamlet and The Royal Family. Closing on January 3rd are Tracy Letts’ Superior Donuts and Shrek The Musical. Burn The Floor, which had previously announced an extension to February 14th has now returned to its original closing date of January 10th. And finally, January 24th will mark the closing of Bye Bye Birdie which was panned by critics.

You read it right! Controversial TV talk show host Jerry Springer is coming to Broadway on August 18th to play the role of Billy Flynn in Chicago. Springer played the same role earlier this summer in the London productions of the show. But tomorrow night he makes his debut in The Big Apple! This is strictly a limited engagement for the notorious TV talker, running only through September 6th, with nights off on August 24th and 31st. Chicago, now featuring Jerry Springer, makes its home at Broadway’s Ambassador Theatre.

La Cage aux Folles
It’s official. The latest revival of La Cage aux Folles is coming to Broadway’s Shubert Theatre next Spring. The original production debuted back in 1983 when it was the recipient of 6 Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical. The show briefly returned to Broadway in 2004, but it closed after fewer than 8 months, the result of mixed reviews. This latest incarnation has been playing at the West End’s Playhouse Theatre since October of 2008. But watch for it to make its move to the Shubert on April 18, 2010.

It’s official: William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is coming to Broadway. This incarnation of the timeless classic will be directed by artistic director Michael Grandage, and the lead role will be played by Jude Law. This will mark Law’s first return to Broadway since he made his debut there in 1995 in Jean Cocteau’s Indescretions (Les Parents Terribles). Watch for previews of this 12-week limited engagement to begin on September 12th at the Broadhurst Theatre, with opening night scheduled for October 6th.

The Little Mermaid Closing
After nearly 700 performances on Broadway, Disney has announced that The Little Mermaid will play its final show on August 30th. Having come to New York from a pre-Broadway run in Denver, the show began its Big Apple engagement on November 3rd of 2007, with opening night on January 10th of the following year. But while the show ends its run at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre next month, look for a national tour to come in 2010, along with international performances as well.

The good news is that there’s still time left to see The Little Mermaid. To join us during these final weeks, simply click here.

Stage and Screen Legend Karl Malden Dies
A veteran of 21 Broadway productions and countless roles on the big and small screens, legendary actor Karl Malden has died at his home at the age of 97. Malden kicked off his Broadway career more than 70 years ago in 1938 in Golden Boy. From there, he went on to star in many motion pictures, most notably his Academy Award winning role as Mitch in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, a role he originally created on Broadway. Malden was also a big hit in our living rooms, where he played opposite Michael Douglas in televisions’ The Streets of San Francisco. And few will forget his part in immortalizing the line, “Don’t leave home without it!” for American Express. Malden is survived by his wife of more than 70 years and two daughters.

That’s today’s ShowBus Buzz. Watch for our next entry very soon.
