Christie Brinkley Returns To Broadway Tonight

She’s graced the covers of hundreds of magazines during her career. But tonight supermodel Christie Brinkley returns to Chicago to reprise the role of Roxie Hart that she first played on Broadway last Spring.

While she’s best known for all those covers, Ms. Brinkley is also no stranger to acting. She has appeared on the big screen in movies like National Lampoon’s Vacation and National Lampoon’s Vegas Vacation. Her television credits include roles in episodes of Ugly Betty, Mad About You and her own show, Living in the 90s – With Christie Brinkley.

While she portrayed Roxie Hart for a couple of months last year, this time around Christie Brinkley will only be with the New York show until April 27th. Then next month she heads West to Chicago’s Los Angeles production for a two week stint there.

Christie Brinkley Headed Back To Broadway

Last Spring, the theatre world was all abuzz about Christie Brinkley making her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in Chicago. Now, almost a year later to the day, she’s returning to fill that role again for a limited engagement. The supermodel will join the New York cast from April 6th through April 27th, after which she will join the show’s national tour in Los Angeles for 12 days in May.

Of course Brinkley is probably best known for all those magazine covers, which included appearances in Sports Illustrated, Cosmopolitan, Vogue, Rolling Stone and countless others. But she’s also no stranger to acting either. Brinkley has appeared on the big screen in movies like National Lampoon’s Vacation and National Lampoon’s Vegas Vacation. Her television credits include roles in episodes of Ugly Betty, Mad About You and her own show, Living in the 90s – With Christie Brinkley.

Christie Brinkley Coming To Chicago

The Broadway production of Chicago will have a new Roxie Hart when supermodel Christie Brinkley takes on the role beginning April 4th. The blond beauty made the announcement on The Oprah Winfrey Show late last week.

Brinkley is probably best known for all those magazine covers, which included appearances in Sports Illustrated, Cosmopolitan, Vogue, Rolling Stone and countless others. But she’s also no stranger to acting either. Brinkley has appeared on the big screen in movies like National Lampoon’s Vacation and National Lampoon’s Vegas Vacation. Her television credits include roles in episodes of Ugly Betty, Mad About You and her own show, Living in the 90s – With Christie Brinkley.

Big Names Broadway Bound

Denzel Coming To Broadway
It’s official. Two time Oscar winning actor Denzel Washington is headed for The Great White Way this spring. Washington will co-star with Viola Davis in the upcoming revival of August Wilson’s Fences.

Set in the 1950s, Fences is the sixth in Wilson’s ten-part Pittsburgh Cycle. Like all of the Pittsburgh plays, this one explores the evolving African-American experience and examines race relations, among other themes. The play earned Wilson the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Actor for James Earl Jones.

The Fences revival will be a 13-week limited engagement at Broadway’s Cort Theatre. Previews are set for April 14th with opening night planned for April 26th. You can be sure that ShowBus Tours will have your tickets!

Michelle Williams Joins Chicago
Songstress Michelle Williams will be assuming the role of Roxie Hart in the Broadway production of Chicago. Music fans know Williams as part of the female musical trio, Destiny’s Child, that also included Beyonce. Theatre fans will remember Williams for playing the title role in the Broadway production of Aida.

Good News from Andrew Lloyd Webber
You may recall that last year we brought you the sobering news that famed composer Andrew Lloyd Webber had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. In an article for London’s Daily Mail last week, Webber says he underwent surgery to remove the prostate and now considers himself “fighting fit,” assuring concerned fans that the cancer had not spread beyond his prostate. While regular check-ups will certainly be in the 61 year old’s future, he describes the result of his surgery as “the best possible outcome.”

Ashlee Simpson Chicago Bound

Just a quick mini-update to let you know that Ashlee Simpson (now Ashley Simpson- Wentz) has taken over the role of Roxie Hart in the long running Broadway musical, Chicago.

The 25 year old music and reality TV star joined the cast on November 29th to reprise the role she played to favorable reviews in London’s West End back in 2006. Simpson, who was recently released from the cast of television’s Melrose Place, is scheduled to be with Chicago through February 7th, 2010.

New Stars, New Shows…

Jerry Springer on Broadway?
You read it right! Controversial TV talk show host Jerry Springer is coming to Broadway on August 18th to play the role of Billy Flynn in Chicago. Springer played the same role earlier this summer in the London productions of the show. But tomorrow night he makes his debut in The Big Apple! This is strictly a limited engagement for the notorious TV talker, running only through September 6th, with nights off on August 24th and 31st. Chicago, now featuring Jerry Springer, makes its home at Broadway’s Ambassador Theatre.

La Cage aux Folles
It’s official. The latest revival of La Cage aux Folles is coming to Broadway’s Shubert Theatre next Spring. The original production debuted back in 1983 when it was the recipient of 6 Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical. The show briefly returned to Broadway in 2004, but it closed after fewer than 8 months, the result of mixed reviews. This latest incarnation has been playing at the West End’s Playhouse Theatre since October of 2008. But watch for it to make its move to the Shubert on April 18, 2010.

New Shows!
We’ve been busy the last week or so adding several new Broadway productions to the list of shows that we’ll be traveling to this Fall. Most of these will begin previews in the next month, including:

So Long Avenue Q
After marking it’s sixth anniversary just last month, Avenue Q has announced that it will close its doors at Broadway’s Golden Theatre on Sunday, September 13th. On that day, it will have played more than 2500 regular performances and grossed more than $117,000,000.

Harada Headed Back to Avenue Q
Broadway veteran Ann Harada, who was part of the original cast of Avenue Q when it debuted on Broadway, is headed back to the show this summer

Harada, who is currently appearing in 9 to 5: The Musical, has also performed on Broadway in Les Miserables, M. Butterfly and Seussical. This summer she will take over the role of Christmas Eve, which she has played in both the London and Broadway Avenue Q productions. Look for Harada at the John Golden Theatre beginning on July 6th.

Neil Simon Revivals
Look for Broadway revivals of two popular Neil Simon plays this Fall as both Brighton Beach Memoirs and Broadway Bound are headed for The Great White Way. While the theatre has yet to be announced, watch for Brighton Beach Memoirs to begin previews on October 2nd with opening night scheduled for October 25th. Broadway Bound begins previews at the same theatre on November 18th with opening night set for December 10th. The two shows will be performed in rep on a varied schedule.

Memphis Headed for Broadway
The new musical, Memphis, a tale of the birth of rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s is headed for Broadway’s Shubert Theatre this Fall. Featuring a score that mixes gospel, R & B and early rock ‘n’ roll, Memphis chronicles the life story of fictional character Huey Calhoun, a young, white radio jock growing up in Memphis in the 1950s.

Previews at the Shubert are set for September 23rd with opening night planned for October 18th.

Harris Set to Join Chicago
If you’re a fan of ABC-TV’s popular Dancing With The Stars, you’ll be pleased to know that the show’s co-host, Samantha Harris, is Broadway-bound this summer. Set for a limited, six-week engagement, Harris will assume the role of Roxie Hart in Chicago from July 7th through August 16th at the Ambassador Theatre.

Comings & Goings on Broadway

Waiting for Godot, starring Nathan Lane and John Goodman, has announced that it is extending its run at Studio 54 through July 12th. Waiting for Godot centers around two men waiting for someone (or something) named Godot, and having a raucous adventure in the process. Earlier this week, the production was nominated for three Tony awards, so Broadway audiences will no doubt appreciate the extra time to see this cryptic and comical play from Samuel Beckett.

But just as one show is extending its run, another is curtailing. The Broadway production of Moises Kaufman’s 33 Variations has announced that it will close at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre three days early on May 21st. Sources explain that the early exit is the result of a scheduling conflict on the calendar of star Jane Fonda. 33 Variations marked Fonda’s return to Broadway after a 47 year hiatus.

And finally, fans of two-time Tony Award winner Bebe Neuwirth will want to know that the actress was married on May 4th in New York City. Neuwirth, who received her Tony nods owing to performances in Sweet Charity and Chicago, is also well known for her role on the hit TV series Cheers and Frasier where she portrayed Lilith Sternin-Crane. The groom is Chris Calkins, the man who founded Destino Vineyards in California’s Napa Valley.
