Recent Shows Burning Up The Box Office

Some of the newer shows to The Great White Way are blazing a path to box office success lately. It seems that theater fans are really warming up to some of our latest additions to PeterPanShowBus.com.

While perennial leaders The Lion King and Wicked still top the charts for box office dollars, Evita has made it’s way into the top five, taking in more an a million and a half in ticket sales last week. And while it didn’t get into the top five, Nice Work If You Can Get It topped a million dollars last week, as folks flocked to see Matthew Broderick and Kelli O’Hara in the lead roles.

When it comes to the frontrunners for theater capacity, Death Of A Salesman, Evita and Newsies all broke into the top five last week. The consistently filled the seats to more than 95% capacity, lagging only slightly behind The Lion King and The Book of Mormon.

Christie Brinkley Returns To Broadway Tonight

She’s graced the covers of hundreds of magazines during her career. But tonight supermodel Christie Brinkley returns to Chicago to reprise the role of Roxie Hart that she first played on Broadway last Spring.

While she’s best known for all those covers, Ms. Brinkley is also no stranger to acting. She has appeared on the big screen in movies like National Lampoon’s Vacation and National Lampoon’s Vegas Vacation. Her television credits include roles in episodes of Ugly Betty, Mad About You and her own show, Living in the 90s – With Christie Brinkley.

While she portrayed Roxie Hart for a couple of months last year, this time around Christie Brinkley will only be with the New York show until April 27th. Then next month she heads West to Chicago’s Los Angeles production for a two week stint there.

Broadway Shines In Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

It’s an annual Big Apple tradition that celebrated 85 years yesterday. And in television coverage of this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, The Great White Way was well represented.

NBC’s coverage of the festivities featured the cast of Newsies performing “King of New York” live in Herald Square in their first hour of coverage. Shortly thereafter it was the stars of Tony winner Priscilla Queen of the Desert belting out a dance medley. Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe lead the cast of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying in performing “Brotherhood of Man” early in the broadcast. Not to be outdone, the crew from Sister Act chimed in with “Spread the Love.” And finally, the cast of Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark performed a medley of songs from that popular show.

CBS also covered the parade live. Their first hour featured the cast of Anything Goes performing the Cole Porter classic “You’re the Top.” Also included in their coverage was a pre-taped performance of “Radio” by the performers from Memphis.

All in all, the parade was a big success, and a great chance for Broadway’s hottest shows to showcase their talents to all of America and beyond.

Extreme Heat Doesn’t Cool Broadway Enthusiasm

Sure the Big Apple was hotter than it’s been all summer last week. But that didn’t cool enthusiasm among theater goers to see their favorite shows. Last week’s box office was strong and here are some of the shows that kept it that way.

Taking in the biggest bucks on Broadway were perennial favorites Wicked and The Lion King. But right behind them were Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, The Book of Mormon and How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. All five shows took in well over a million dollars each last week.

In addition to The Lion King and Wicked, several other shows packed their theaters for the week at 100% of capacity – or more. Among those were The Book of Mormon, Anything Goes, How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying and War Horse.

The forecast for our next ShowBus Tour to Broadway? Probably cooler than last week! Inside the theaters – always cool, in more ways than one!

Four New Broadway Shows at ShowBus!

JERUSALEM arrives on Broadway following record-breaking sold-out runs at London’s Royal Court Theatre and in the West End. On the morning of the local county fair, Johnny Byron is a wanted man. Local officials want to serve him an eviction notice, his son wants his full attention, and his motley crew of friends wants his ample supply of booze…

PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT THE MUSICAL is the heart-warming, uplifting adventure of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus searching for love and friendship and end up finding more than they could have ever dreamed of. Driving Miss Daisy…To Broadway!

Two Tony Award winners have been tapped for the arrival of Driving Miss Daisy on Broadway. Legendary actors James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave will be taking the lead roles in this limited engagement set for later this year.

Driving Miss Daisy is the 1987 play by Pulitzer Prize winner Alfred Uhry about the relationship of an elderly Southern Jewish woman, Daisy Werthan, and her African-American chauffeur, Hoke Colburn, from 1948 to 1973. While the play has been performed off-Broadway in addition to winning an Academy Award for its big screen adaptation in 1989, this production will mark its debut on The Great White Way.

Driving Miss Daisy will begin previews at the Golden Theatre on October 7th, with opening night set for October 25th. You can be sure that ShowBus will have your tickets!

Guys & Dolls Closing June 14th

Despite its two Tony Award nominations for Best Revival of a Musical and Best Scenic Design, Guys & Dolls has announced that the production will close later this week. The show, which played just 28 previews and 113 performances, will open on Broadway for the final time this Sunday, June 14th at the Nederlander Theatre.

Much more successful was the original Guys & Dolls, which debuted on Broadway in 1950 and played some 1200 performances. This latest incarnation is set for a national tour next year, though dates, cities and cast have yet to be announced.

Video Extra: The 39 Steps

If you’re like many people, The 39 Steps may have escaped your Broadway radar over the last several month. But some not-so-easy-to-please critics have been singing its praises. Liz Smith, for example, from The New York Post, called it “the most entertaining show on Broadway!” David Richardson of New York’s WOR radio described it as “about the cleverest show on Broadway in a long time.”

So what exactly is this show all about? Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre! This 2-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winner is packed with non-stop laughs, over 150 zany characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of just 4!), an on-stage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers and some good old-fashioned romance!

Video Extra: The Lion King

Disney’s The Lion King made its world premiere at Minneapolis’ Orpheum Theatre back in July of 1997. These days it makes its home at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre along with several other locations around the world.

Known for its dazzling special effects, and music by Tim Rice, Elton John, Hans Zimmer and Lebo M., The Lion King has garnered rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. And while new shows are always making their way to The Great White Way, The Lion King remains a perennial fan favorite.
