Broadway Unites To Commemorate 9/11

New York’s Duffy Square will be host to several big name Broadway celebrities this Friday as The Broadway League presents Broadway Unites: 9/11 Days of Service and Remembrance. Expected to be in attendance for the event are Harvey Fierstein, Bebe Neuwirth, Joel Grey, Brooke Shields and Matthew Broderick.

The stars will be joined by cast members from several current Broadway shows and a 29-piece live orchestra to sing Kander & Ebb’s “New York, New York.” You may recall that, 10 years ago, the Broadway community also performed this song in the aftermath of 9/11. This year, as we commemorate the 10th anniversary, the song will follow NYPD Officer Daniel Rodriguez’s singing of “God Bless America.”

Broadway Unites: 9/11 Days of Service and Remembrance will kick off at 4 p.m. at Duffy Park this Friday, September 9th.

Brooke Shields Extends In The Addams Family

She was originally set to exit on October 30th. But now Brooke Shields will stay on as Morticia in The Addams Family through the end of the year, making her final appearance on New Year’s Eve.

Shields joined the show in June of this year, replacing Bebe Neuwirth who originated the Morticia role when The Addams Family opened in 2010. Shields is no stranger to The Great White Way. Her career has included appearances in Chicago, Cabaret, Grease and Wonderful Town. Of course she’s also well known for her long screen career, including memorable roles in films like Pretty Baby, The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love, and in TV’s Suddenly Susan.

This Broadway adaptation of The Addams Family features an original story. It’s every parent’s nightmare. Your little girl has suddenly become a young woman, and what’s worse, has fallen deliriously in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. Yes, Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has a “normal” boyfriend, and for parents Gomez and Morticia, it’s a shocking development that turns the Addams house upside down when they are forced to host a dinner for the young man and his parents.

Brooke Shields Coming To The Addams Family

Word out of Broadway today is that Brooke Shields will be joining the cast of The Addams Family on June 28th. Shields will take over the role of Morticia after current star Bebe Neuwirth departs on June 26th.

Shields is no stranger to The Great White Way. Her career has included appearances in Chicago, Cabaret, Grease and Wonderful Town. Of course she’s also well known for her long screen career, including memorable roles in films like Pretty Baby, The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love, and in TV’s Suddenly Susan.

Spotlight On The Addams Family

We’re getting a lot of positive feedback from people who join us to see Broadway’s The Addams Family, starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth. And it turns out it’s not just our travelers who like this zany musical. Last week it was in the top five highest grossing shows on Broadway again – despite the fact that it’s been playing now for more than 7 months. People still love this show!

Last Week’s Best On Broadway

It was a busy week on Broadway last week and we thought we’d share with you the shows that were the most popular among theatre enthusiasts. There were no real surprises on the list of shows taking in the most money, though The Addams Family, starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth, is a new entry to that list. Here’s a look at the most popular shows for the week ending April 18th by gross receipts:

Wicked
The Lion King
The Addams Family
Billy Elliot
Jersey Boys

Rating the shows on the percentage of theatre seats filled last week, Wicked, Billy Elliot and The Lion King were all at 97% or better. Rounding out the top five on this list were Denzel Washington in Fences and the Broadway play Red.

The Addams Family Comes To Broadway

If you’re of a certain age, you’ll remember The Addams Family television show in the mid 1960s, starring John Astin and Carolyn Jones. Now that same macabre crew has come to Broadway with Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth in the starring roles of Gomez and Morticia.

The new Broadway adaptation of The Addams Family features an original story. It’s every parent’s nightmare. Finian’s Rainbow
The St. James Theatre will be home to this Fall’s Broadway revival of Finian’s Rainbow. Set in the mythical southern state of Missitucky, Finian’s Rainbow pits a charming Irish dreamer and his headstrong daughter against the host of complications that await them in their newly adopted land: a bigoted southern Senator, a credit crisis, a pesky leprechaun and, of course, a complicated love affair that gives birth to some of the most witty, charming and heartfelt songs ever written for the stage.

Watch for previews of Finian’s Rainbow to begin on October 8th with opening night at the St. James Theatre on October 29th.

The Addams Family
Last May we told you about the upcoming Broadway production of The Addams Family starring Broadway veterans Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth. At that time, we couldn’t tell you exactly when the show would open, or where it would open. Today we’re happy to say that those details have now been firmed up.

Watch for The Addams Family to begin previews at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on March 4th with an April 8th opening to follow.

The Addams Family features a book by the Jersey Boys team of Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice and music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. Choreography is by Sergio Trujillo, known for his work in Next to Normal and Jersey Boys.

9 To 5 Closing
It’s a premature Broadway curtain call for 9 To 5: The Musical as the show prepares to go dark after its final performance at the Marquis Theatre on September 6th. Inspired by the 1980s film of the same name, 9 To 5 will have lasted only 24 previews and 148 performances when it closes its doors Labor Day weekend. New Shows, New Stars

Superior Donuts
There’s a new production on the horizon from the playwright who brought us August: Osage County. Tracy Letts’ Superior Donuts is scheduled to begin previews on Broadway on October 1st. As of this writing, no theatre has yet been named. The story, which takes place in Chicago, revolves around the unlikely friendship between a withdrawn ex-hippie donut-shop owner and his brash, bright-eyed young African-American employee. Casting for Superior Donuts has yet to be announced, but you can be sure you’ll read about it here when the roles are cast.

Nathan Lane & Bebe Neuwirth

How’s this for a pairing? Broadway stars Nathan Lane and newlywed Bebe Neuwirth are set to play the leading roles of Gomez and Morticia when the new musical version of The Addams Family begins previews next March. Both Lane and Neuwirth are two-time Tony Award winners, Lane for his roles in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum and The Producers, Neuwirth for her performances in Sweet Charity and Chicago. At this writing, no theatre has been announced for The Addams Family.

The Little Mermaid
There’s a new prince and a new princess coming to Disney’s production of The Little Mermaid on Broadway. Chelsea Morgan Stock will take over the role of Ariel from Sierra Boggess on June 2nd, while Drew Seeley assumes the role of Prince Eric from Sean Palmer on June 9th. The Little Mermaid is on now at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.

Comings & Goings on Broadway

Waiting for Godot, starring Nathan Lane and John Goodman, has announced that it is extending its run at Studio 54 through July 12th. Waiting for Godot centers around two men waiting for someone (or something) named Godot, and having a raucous adventure in the process. Earlier this week, the production was nominated for three Tony awards, so Broadway audiences will no doubt appreciate the extra time to see this cryptic and comical play from Samuel Beckett.

But just as one show is extending its run, another is curtailing. The Broadway production of Moises Kaufman’s 33 Variations has announced that it will close at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre three days early on May 21st. Sources explain that the early exit is the result of a scheduling conflict on the calendar of star Jane Fonda. 33 Variations marked Fonda’s return to Broadway after a 47 year hiatus.

And finally, fans of two-time Tony Award winner Bebe Neuwirth will want to know that the actress was married on May 4th in New York City. Neuwirth, who received her Tony nods owing to performances in Sweet Charity and Chicago, is also well known for her role on the hit TV series Cheers and Frasier where she portrayed Lilith Sternin-Crane. The groom is Chris Calkins, the man who founded Destino Vineyards in California’s Napa Valley.
