Three time emmy award winner James Spader is scheduled to make his Broadway debut later this year when he will star in David Mamet’s Race. Spader, who won his Emmys for performances in television’s Boston Legal and The Practice, has also starred in several movies including Sex, Lies and Videotape, Secretary and Pretty in Pink. Race is set to begin previews at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on November 17th, with opening night planned for December 6th.

Phylicia Rashad Headed Back to Broadway
Cosby Show mom, Phylicia Rashad, is scheduled for a return to Broadway this week when she joins the cast of August: Osage County on May 26th. Rashad replaces Estelle Parsons in the role of Violet Weston, the play’s acerbic, pill-popping matriarch. Rashad has previously performed on Broadway in A Raisin in the Sun, Gem of the Ocean and, most recently, in the 2008 revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. This limited engagement for Rashad at the Music Box Theatre is set to end on August 23rd.

Show Closings
Two notable productions are scheduled to play their final performances in May. Barely a month after its opening at the St. James Theatre, Desire Under The Elms, starring Brian Dennehy, is set to close on May 24th. Also closing later this month is the West End run of the Tony Award winning musical, Spring Awakening, which had been booking through October of this year. The show will see it’s final curtain on May 30th at the Novello Theatre.

There’s a new production on the horizon from the playwright who brought us August: Osage County. Tracy Letts’ Superior Donuts is scheduled to begin previews on Broadway on October 1st. As of this writing, no theatre has yet been named. The story, which takes place in Chicago, revolves around the unlikely friendship between a withdrawn ex-hippie donut-shop owner and his brash, bright-eyed young African-American employee. Casting for Superior Donuts has yet to be announced, but you can be sure you’ll read about it here when the roles are cast.

The Addams Family

Nathan Lane & Bebe Neuwirth

How’s this for a pairing? Broadway stars Nathan Lane and newlywed Bebe Neuwirth are set to play the leading roles of Gomez and Morticia when the new musical version of The Addams Family begins previews next March. Both Lane and Neuwirth are two-time Tony Award winners, Lane for his roles in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum and The Producers, Neuwirth for her performances in Sweet Charity and Chicago. At this writing, no theatre has been announced for The Addams Family.

The Little Mermaid
There’s a new prince and a new princess coming to Disney’s production of The Little Mermaid on Broadway. Chelsea Morgan Stock will take over the role of Ariel from Sierra Boggess on June 2nd, while Drew Seeley assumes the role of Prince Eric from Sean Palmer on June 9th. The Little Mermaid is on now at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.

And that’s today’s buzz from Broadway. Join us later this week for our next blog update.
