Scottsboro Boys Just Around The Corner

Here’s a show that’s already garnering great buzz, even before it makes its Broadway debut early next month! The Scottsboro Boys is the final collaboration by musical theatre legends John Kander and Fred Ebb, known for their work together on Chicago and Cabaret.

The Scottsboro Boys is based on the notorious “Scottsboro” case in the 1930s, where nine African American men were unjustly accused of attacking two white women on a train in Alabama. The young men were convicted by an all-white jury and spent years in jail, while the case was tried and retried. In the tradition of their classic musicals Cabaret and Chicago, Kander and Ebb explore this dark chapter of American history in a daringly inventive and startling piece of musical theatre entertainment.

The Scottsboro Boys will be directed by 5-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman (The Producers) and will feature a book by David Thompson. Previews are set to begin at the Lyceum Theatre on October 7th, with opening night scheduled for October 31st.

Patti LuPone Returning to Broadway

There’s always excitement in the air when Patti LuPone is Broadway-bound. And that’s true once again as the stage veteran prepares for her role in Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown which opens at the Belasco Theatre this Fall.

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is a musical that tells the tale of a group of women in late 20th-century Madrid whose relationships with men lead to a tumultuous 48 hours of love, confusion and passion. It’s based on the 1988 film of the same name, which was written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar.

LuPone will play Lucia, a woman who has been recently released from a mental facility and is tracking down the father of her child and his mistress for one last confrontation.

Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown begins previews on October 2nd with opening night set for November 4th at the newly refurbished Belasco Theatre.

Dates Set For Pacino In Merchant of Venice

The dates are now official. Previews begin October 19th and opening night is set for November 7th for Al Pacino starring in The Merchant of Venice at the Broadhurst Theatre. The show moves to the Broadhurst after a sold-out summer of Shakespeare In The Park performances that ended earlier this month.

Pacino, both a Tony and Acadamy Award winner, plays the role of Shylock in this timeless Shakespearean comedy. The performance is a limited engagement for the actor who will end his role on January 9th.

This is likely to be a hot ticket. But as soon as we have them available, you can be sure you’ll read about it here first.

Football’s Lombardi Coming to Broadway

Promises Stars Departing In December

The hit Broadway musical Promises, Promises has announced that its leading man and leading lady will depart the show on December 26th. On that night, Kristin Chenoweth and Sean Hayes will give their final performances as Fran Kubelik and Chuck Baxter at the Broadway Theatre.

Based on the 1960 film The Apartment, Promises, Promises tells the story of the Consolidated Life Insurance Company and Chuck Baxter, one of its charming young employees. In an effort to advance his career, Chuck lends executives his apartment for their extramarital romantic trysts. But things become slightly complicated when Chuck discovers Fran Kubelik, the object of his affection, is involved with one of the executives.

Fela! Closing But LaBelle Extends

Barely a month ago we reported that Grammy Award winner Patti LaBelle would be joining the cast of Fela! as a short-term stand in for Lillias White who was taking a short leave. Now comes word that Fela! will close on January 2nd and that LaBelle will extend her role through the production’s final night.

Fela! tells the true story of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, whose soulful Afrobeat rhythms ignited a generation. Motivated by his mother, a civil rights champion, he defied a corrupt and oppressive military government and devoted his life and music to the struggle for freedom and human dignity.

LaBelle is excited to be extending her role. “After seeing the show, I was struck by the choreography and work of Bill T. Jones, and the passion and joy that overflows from the stage,” she said. “Fela’s mother, Funmilayo, was a strong, truly inspiring woman and I am so privileged to be able to pay tribute to her on the Broadway stage.”

New Foxwoods Theatre on Broadway

Folks here in Western Massachusetts know the Foxwoods name well for the nearby casino and resort. But now that name will be well known in The Big Apple too, as the Hilton Theatre takes on its new name – Foxwoods Theatre – effective immediately.

The 1800 seat theatre on 42nd Street has undergone extensive renovations over the last year in anticipation of its first big show under the new name. Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark begins rehearsals at the venue later this month, though its official opening date has yet to be announced.

We’re told that the Foxwoods brand will be incorporated into all exterior and interior venue signage, including the theater’s iconic sign overlooking 42nd Street and in the theater’s VIP Suite and the Dress Circle Lobby. Foxwoods Theatre will have its own unique logo and website, www.foxwoodstheatre.com.

Kelsey Grammer Extends In La Cage

Good news for fans of TV’s Frasier. Kelsey Grammer will be extending his Tony Award nominated role in La Cage Aux Folles for another six months. Grammer, along with co-star and Tony winner Douglas Hodge, will stay with the production through February of 2011 when both will exit the show.

Winner of the 2010 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, La Cage is a tuneful and touching tale of one family’s struggle to stay together… stay fabulous… and above all else, stay true to themselves! Grammer stars as Georges, the owner of a glitzy nightclub in lovely Saint-Tropez. Hodge stars as his partner Albin, who moonlights as the glamorous chanteuse Zaza. When Georges’ son brings his fiancée’s conservative parents home to meet the flashy pair, the bonds of family are put to the test as the feather boas fly!

Wintuk Returning For The Holidays

It’s a show that’s been a big fan favorite among our ShowBus travelers for the last several years. Now comes word that Cirque du Soleil’s Wintuk will return to Madison Square Garden again this holiday season for its fourth and final year. Performances begin on November 17th and will run through January 2nd.

The show is an enchanting winter tale about a young boy, Jamie, and his quest to find snow. He lives in a city where the arrival of winter has brought long shadows and intense cold – but no snow!

Jamie interacts with a cast of high-energy urban street characters, including acrobats, dancers and giant marionettes. But as the snow fails to come, he embarks on a journey to an imaginary Nordic world called Wintuk with three companions – a female Shaman who’s lost in the city, a timid young man called Wimpy destined to discover his courage, and the shadow of a young girl—to find the snow and bring it back to where it belongs.

Wintuk weaves thrilling acrobatics, dazzling oversized marionettes, breathtaking theatrical effects and memorable songs together in a touching story line that resonates with the whole family. Take a look at this video clip and you’ll see why it’s so popular among our travelers:

Come Fly Away Sets Closing Date

Despite many outstanding reviews, Come Fly Away, the Broadway musical set to the music of Frank Sinatra, is set to close at the Marquis Theatre on Sunday, September 5th.

In addition to the music of Ol’ Blue Eyes, the show features choreography by Twyla Tharp. Her work earned her a Tony Award nomination, though the award ultimately went to Bill T. Jones for Fela!

While the show opened strong, the box office has been falling for several months, presumably resulting in the decision to close. As of September 5th, the production will have played 26 previews and 187 regular performances.
