He’s a former college basketball player turned actor. Now 6’9″ thespian Tug Coker is set to play basketball living legend Larry Bird in the upcoming Broadway production of Magic/Bird.
Magic/Bird will trace the competition and friendship between Larry Bird and Magic Johnson from their days as NBA rookies to their appearance on the 1992 Olympic Dream Team. As hoop fans of that era will remember, Johnson and Bird played integral roles in the historic rivalry between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers during the 1980s.
Tug Coker played basketball at the College of William and Mary. From there he transferred to the University of Virginia where he also played. Ultimately he left UVA to pursue his dream to become an actor
Producers are looking toward a March 2012 opening for Magic/Bird at a yet undisclosed theatre. No actor has been announced to play the role of Magic Johnson.
