The Great White Way had some VIP guests on Sunday afternoon. First Lady Michelle Obama, accompanied by her two daughters, Sasha and Malia, and her mother, Marian Robinson, attended that day’s matinee performance Memphis: A New Musical. And as they took their seats, the first family was greeted with a standing ovation from their fellow audience members.
Based on actual events, Memphis: A New Musical is the story of a young, white radio DJ named Huey Calhoun, whose love of music transcends race lines and airwaves. Felicia Farrell is a black singer, whose career is on the rise, but who can’t break out of segregated clubs. When the two collaborate, her soulful music reaches radio audiences everywhere, and the Golden Era of early rock ‘n’ roll takes flight. But as things start to heat up, whether the world is really ready for their music – or their love – is put to the test.
